Dr. Jocie Sweeney is a Licensed Psychologist and has been working in the mental health field for over ten years. She received her PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from UNC Charlotte and completed her pre-doctoral internship at Georgia Southern University Counseling Center specializing in military issues; LGBQ, trans, and gender-diverse affirming therapy; and group therapy. During her internship, she served as a Group Therapy Coordinator and Military Liaison, leading groups to treat anxiety, depression, trauma, and coping skills.

Jocie’s affiliations include the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the Mecklenburg Psychological Association, Charlotte Trans Health, and the North Carolina Psychological Association.

Jocie is known for her genuineness and humor, which help foster a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients. Through these trusting relationships, she strives to help clients develop greater awareness and motivation to overcome challenges and improve their quality of life. She believes the most difficult steps in therapy are scheduling and attending the initial appointment. She aims to honor her clients’ courage by working collaboratively with them toward their goals.

As the Owner and Operator of SweeneyPsych, PLLC, Dr. Jocie and her staff provide treatment to help people learn and apply tools to move forward from life challenges and live a joy-filled life. They embrace diversity and provide services to multiple populations in a confidential, nonjudgmental environment.

Trained as a generalist in clinical health psychology, Jocie is experienced with a wide range of issues, from stress management and life transitions to more severe concerns such as trauma. She specializes in working with LGBTQ+ adults and uses the Informed Consent Model for gender-affirming surgery letters.

Jocie continues her learning through coursework, training, consultation, and—most importantly—listening to people with lived experience when they are able to share.

GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE

Gender-affirming letters with Jocie

Jocie does not charge for letter sessions. Many physicians listed on Charlotte Trans Health do not require a letter for gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT). For top surgery, a few physicians in Charlotte use the Informed Consent Model, but most insurance companies require a letter.

If your physician requires a letter for gender-affirming surgery or hormone treatment, Jocie usually completes it in one session and may need to meet with you no more than twice. If you have already received a letter, please send it to Jocie beforehand or bring it to your session.

Jocie is training another clinician, Kate Hoyle, in gender-affirming letter sessions. With your permission, Kate will join the appointment by video. Jocie is happy to update or edit the letter within six months at no charge. After six months, a brief follow-up visit is needed to discuss any updates, also at no charge.

If this process is not the right fit, you can schedule with Tatim Lace or Eve Rogerson, or visit Charlotte Trans Health for additional referrals.
